The disturbing video, filmed in Peru, has sparked outrage but villagers claim the dog deserved to be “punished’ for its bad behaviour
A sick video showing a dog being tied to the back of a bull for a bullfight has caused outrage.
The cruel tradition is still practiced in the small village of Chalhuani near the city of Abancay in the Apurimac region of central Peru.
And the shocking footage went viral after being published online.
Cruel Footage: A dog was forced to take part in bullfight, footage shows
A man can be clearly seen tying the dog down onto the back of the raging bull which is about to be sent out to a ring to be killed along with the dog.
The dog can be heard yelping and barking as it is lashed tight to the bull’s back.
It is virtually spread-eagled and cannot move apart from lifting its head.
Animal Rampage: The bull runs around the bullfight ring with the dog strapped to it
The video then shows the angry bull charging and jumping into the ring with the terrified dog tied to its back.
Several viewers posted their feelings on social media.
Edwin Valdivia stormed: “What cruelty. The people who did this are b*******.”
Naomi Valdivia Cortez said: “Ignorant people, poor animal”
Disturbing Tradition: The village reportedly has a track record of animal cruelty
Julian La Rosa: “What a sick mind you need to have to do this sort of thing.”
The village has a tradition of animal cruelty. Every year during a religious celebration dedicated to Virgin Mary and called Virgen de la Asuncion, people tie a dog to a bull during the local bullfight.
Speaking on local television a villager identified only as Alfeo said: “We pick a dog that was disobedient over the past 12 months and has caused trouble. As a community we see this as a fitting punishment for the dog’s bad behaviour.”
